β Students practice Wednesdays during lunch
@12:15 – 1 pm (January – mid March)
β We need 6 volunteers per week!
β Less than 45 min. per week time commitment
This is a fun program that strengthens our 5th Graders’ skills in leadership and public speaking. The program is voluntary, and the students get extra credit for participation. This program has always been very popular at MATES – both for the 5th graders who perform as well as the lower grade classes that watch the performances.
All parents are encouraged to participate. For 4th grade parents, it is exciting to see what our future 5th graders have to look forward to next year.
The 5th graders will be working in groups to learn about a significant woman in history, create a photo montage, and participate in research and a live presentation. The students create a skit that highlights a historical time or event in the life of their assigned woman (yes, plenty of roles for boys as well!).
All preparatory activities will take place during lunch on Wednesdays, where students collect photos, do research, work on their montage, and learn lines for their skits. There is no out-of-school commitment other than reading through and studying their lines.
To pull this off, we will need A LOT of parent volunteers. Volunteers will work with the students to research their assigned historical figure, create signs and props for the play, learn and rehearse lines, and organize costumes for their performance on Wednesday, March 25th. Please help make this important and cherished event happen. Even coming in for one lunch period can make a huge difference!

2024-25:
Every year, MATES honors women who have made a difference in the world.
Working with the American Association of University Women, we highlight a different group of women every year. Our 5th graders work hard to create their own presentations to share with the school.
All MATES students benefit from learning about these remarkable women in our history, and our 5th graders gain skills in public speaking, team collaboration, research, and more!
